Bad News Rescue
The media seems to consistently proclaim bad news every day. After a while, the bad news stops just making you sick and you become deadened to it unless, of course, the bad news is directly affecting you. But sometimes even your own situations don’t seem so bad when you are surrounded by other’s even worse bad news.
Take for instant the man shipwrecked on a tiny deserted island. He thought that life couldn’t get any worse than that. He spent many years longing for the times of the past and continued to hope for a rescue because he thought then all his troubles would be solved. One day as he looked out on the horizon he was so excited to finally see a ship. He waited patiently as the rescue team slowly made their way to him and stepped onto the beach.
The man ran to greet his rescuers with open arms thanking them but the head of the team stopped him and instead handed him a stack of newspapers. ”This is compliments of the Captain,” the sailor said. ”He would like you to look at the headlines and see if you’d still like to be rescued!”
The headlines of life can be rather scary. Evil seems to surround the world more so than ever and some days it just seems like it is winning. But there is a better way to focus on life. A way in which the headlines no longer matter. You can live a fearless life but only when you fear God by following His ways. Easter is your reminder that there is no human strong enough, no grave deep enough, and no stone heavy enough to keep Christ down. Evil will never hold Christ back. It didn’t yesterday, it doesn’t today, and won’t tomorrow.
They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. Psalm 112:7 (NLT)
The Daily Gather
The way to handle bad news is to place your faith in God. This won’t stop the evil on earth or give you an invisible shield where evil can’t touch you but there are many advantages even on earth of believing in Christ. God stands guard for the minds and actions of all those who follow His commands. He won’t stop the bad news from coming but He will help you deal with it. By believing fully in Him the bad news that rocks your world today can quickly be wrestled to the floor and dealt with.
When you are secure in your ultimate destination you allow God to be in full control. Allow Him to take care of you and you will find that your other fears even the uncertainty of death itself will subside. This peace from God is how you deal with the bad things in life. But it must be gathered daily for you can’t hoard it, store it up, or even share it.
A daily peace gathering is much like the Israelites collected manna in order to live. Their manna, like God’s offering of peace, is sufficient only for the present when you come to Him. Permanent peace does not exist outside of God or independent of Him. God provides it daily to you if you choose to gather it by following Him constantly. This requires you to rely on Him and not yourself through seeking God daily.
Sounds great and so easy but fully placing God in control of your life is one of the hardest things you can do. Sometimes even the faithful falter or doubt when life blows up and the bad news comes in droves. It is difficult to fall on your knees when you feel like you need to take over. Even when you forget to go to God first though, He patiently stands by waiting for you to turn to Him.
A family on vacation in a place they were totally unfamiliar with were trying to reach their destination as quickly as possible. Determined Dad was driving when they came to a sign that read, ”Road Closed. Do Not Enter.” The man preceded around the sign because he was confident it would save them time. His wife was resistant to this shortcut but this persistent shortcut guru refused to obey the sign. After a few miles of successful navigation, he began to brag about his gift of discernment.
His proud smile soon, however, found itself replaced with a trickle of humble sweat as the road led to a washed-out bridge. He had no choice but to attempt to turn the car around in the narrow and dangerous space to retrace his route back to the main road. As the family arrived at the original warning sign mother began to laugh as Dad looked up to read a handwritten greeting in large letters on the back of the sign, ”Welcome back, stupid!”
Bad News Readiness
Sometimes your utmost confidence in yourself to figure out issues or fix your bad news problems can let you down. Your confidence is only as good as the object it’s placed in. So when the bad news of life hits, turn and place your confidence in an unchanging, all-powerful God. God waits for your return and He will not admonish you when you charge forth to take things into your own hands. But you don’t have to live life on the edge if you gather with Him every day.
Daily gathering of your peace will help you develop your relationship with God. Learning His ways so that when that bad news comes prepares you to turn to Him first. So take this gathering challenge daily so you can be armed and ready. Find your conviction through your belief and trust God fully. The desired motivation of peace descends upon you as you place your full confidence and control in Him.
Peace will come even when the bad news of life arrives in droves. So gather yours for today knowing that tomorrow you will need to gather again trusting that He always provides.
Love in Christ,
A recently licensed pilot was flying his private plane on a cloudy day. He was not very experienced in instrument landing. When the control tower was to bring him in, he began to get panicky. Then a stern voice came over the radio, ”You just obey instructions, we’ll take care of the obstructions.”
