Do you wear the clothing of consideration as you interact with other people in your daily life? Consideration, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary is thoughtful and sympathetic regard or opinion obtained by reflection. However, reading or listening to the news of politics and mayhem, it appears that it is something that has fallen by the wayside. What has happened to common courtesy and politeness in society? Are we hiding behind our social media platforms? A place where many people feel they hold anonymity and can freely fire off random unthoughtful speech with little thought that they wouldn’t in face-to-face situations? Since we’re in a new season, maybe it is time for all of us to put on a new layer of clothing.
This past weekend, I spent a day cleaning out my closet. The weather is rapidly cooling in my part of the world. Therefore, it is time to put away the cooler summer clothes and get warmer winter clothes in their place. I am not a clothes horse, but I must admit is it always exciting to pull out favorite pieces of clothing. This often refreshes my spirit and boosts my daily life. Putting on new things, even old new things can give us a new outlook. This in turn can shine on those around us as well. It gives us a necessary change that projects a different attitude. And perhaps this is why clothing is a common New Testament metaphor for spiritual change as well.
The Clothing of Consideration
When we put on new clothing, we exchange the old for the new. This is consistent with the expression of the New Testament teaching of holiness and righteousness. We are consistently told to clothe ourselves with Christ, put on compassion, kindness, humility gentleness, and patience. All of these require us to be cloaked in consideration for others. And for believers, this confronts us with the ambiguity of God’s free invitation to the banquet but the requirement of wearing the necessary clothes. In other words, if we want to attend the wedding, then we must do more than show up with our invitation. (Matthew 22)
As we go out in the world, or even within our family groups, consideration should be at the forefront of our interactions. And less, we do not understand the meaning of consideration, it can also be known as being reasonable, fair, and charitable to everyone, whether they believe in the same things we do or not. For it is in the wearing of the clothing of consideration that we can know and experience the joy of giving and fullness of life. This is in addition to knowing that we are living the righteousness of life that Christ sets the example for.
When we wear clothes of consideration, we lay down our selfishness. This means we don’t live a life that consistently shouts about our rights. It means that when we are treated unfairly, we do not seek revenge. We put our grumbles to rest and stop blaming others for the things that go wrong in our lives. It means that we, as believers, know that Christ is indeed, coming soon.
Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember the Lord is coming soon.Philippians 4:5 (NLT)
Consideration, Necessary Banquet Clothing
Wearing the clothing of consideration isn’t always easy. For it means we must take responsibility for our share of the problems. It is all too easy to excuse our sins and blame others or even our circumstances for our behavior. But God knows the truth and He will hold each of us responsible for our actions. When we put on our clothing of consideration, we must also put away our judgment of others. We will each be evaluated by Christ, the judge, and He will not allow us to shift the blame of our shortcomings to anyone or anything else. So, as we dress in the cloak of consideration let us remember to admit attitudes and actions of wrongness. Apologize to God and take responsibility for ourselves.
Won’t’ you be challenged to put on your clothing of consideration as you get dressed each day? Find your convictions rooted in the scriptures, where examples and writing make it clear that peace comes from knowing that God is in control. Believers’ have full citizenship in Christ’s Kingdom and our destiny is set, however, there is a responsibility expected for this gift. Embrace and experience motivation from knowing that ultimate joy comes only from Christ dwelling within you. It is He who lives within you that will fulfill His final purposes for you and it is your responsibility to be ready. Lastly surround yourself in the comfort of knowing that He, indeed, is coming.
Love in Christ,
Really big people are, above everything else, courteous, considerate, and generous – not just to some people in some circumstances – but to everyone all the time.Thomas J. Watson
