Jewels in the Winter Fog
Do you find the dull of winter a comfort or are you waiting anxiously for the jewels of spring? Since it is a rare instance in my area that snow occurs sometimes it seems the brown ground of winter lasts forever. Spring is always a welcome sight as it breaks the monotony of the monotone winter into daily delights of color. Perhaps though winter offers its own feast of visual jewels, you just have to look for them.
A few days ago, as I finished my early morning walk, I happened upon some winter visual treasures. As I rounded the bend, fog drifted in after a beautiful early morning sunrise. The fog was a strange yet enticing sight and as I contemplated this visual experience I noticed an even more breathtaking wonder. The sun, ever so weakly, was casting a thin beam of light that caused the branch in front of me to suddenly glisten and sparkle in the rays very much like miniature jewels. The beads of moisture, the fog brought to the branch, now coupled with the light caused the drops to dance ever so delicately.
It was an incredible sight as I realized all the branches of the surrounding trees wore tiny bright shining beads of light. But I quickly noted that if I shifted slightly they would disappear. For the enchanted experience of witnessing the gorgeous sight of dancing jewels contrasting against the bare branches of winter came from not only the way the light cast but my position within the light. In order for me to see the phenomenon, I realized that seeking and seeing the vision came not because the light needed to change but because I had to change my focus position to the correct alignment of the light.
Isn’t God, the true shining light of our life, the one light that we need to seek our focus upon? Shouldn’t we align our life in the right position with His will so we may find the precious jewels of comfort and contentment even in the winter seasons of our life? When we take our focus off of God all we can see is the focus of the monotonous world but by simply shifting our position back to God we clearly see the treasures He has in store for us even when life’s horizon appears bleak.
God supplies these little jewels of comfort all the time but you have to seek His goodness in order to experience them. His encouragement comes in many ways such as His presence through His creations, but they’re also in His Word, and experienced through His people. Seeking God out doesn’t relieve you of misfortune but it does strengthen and give you His comfort as you face it. For when focusing on the goodness of God even the smallest and most tiny precious of things provides contentment and peace. The ultimate comfort however is the fact that you hold the knowledge that someday you will reside with Him.
Isaiah brought the news of a bleak future to God’s people with tenderness and comfort. He knew that God holds true to His promises and hopes thus providing treasures of contentment even in adversity.
”Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. Isaiah 40:1 (NLT)
How to Find the Jewels of Comfort
There are jewels found even in the midst of overwhelming circumstances providing you are in the light of God. You don’t have to travel far away to find God for there are beautiful jewels found in life no matter what your surroundings are. The key to seeing them finds its root in your focus and position.
So keep your focus on God knowing that He does indeed keep His promises. He is causing the good of all things for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) For He does have plans for you that are good. He gives you a future and hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
You are challenged to seek and find God in all the seasons of your life. Keep your focus narrow and straight by knowing that one day you will reside with Him. He motivates you by providing little glimpses of Him everywhere but you must look and see. So find His comfort in knowing that He surrounds you with all His goodness even when you don’t’ recognize it.
See and experience for yourself the jewels in the moments of your life. Then thank God for these experiences no matter how small. For you will find yourself more in tune with praise than complaint. This lessens your anxiety and provides you peace and comfort even in the most trying of circumstances.
Love in Christ,
Adversity is the diamond dust Heaven polishes its jewels with.
