Never Alone – Paying Attention to Life

Never Alone

Never Alone: Resting in the Breeze - A Studio 1-37 Original Image

Do you realize in your day-to-day life events that we are never alone? If we truly pay attention to the things going on in our life, we quickly realize that there is someone watching over us. Sometimes when we journey through life, we lose our focus and purpose as the world presses in on us. So, we often move through life going in and out with little thought of God and place our primary focus on our daily tasks. It is easy to forget that we are not alone, and we are not expected to carry life by ourselves. It is in these times that we need to pay even closer attention to our surroundings and carefully reflect on how Christ walks with us daily.

Spring will soon be here and with it comes the ability to really see how God is with us. There will be beautiful flowers popping up, leaves and buds opening, and the embrace of warmth after the coldness of winter. But soon after spring, the hot weather of summer will descend and once again, we might question if we are alone on earth. I read a story earlier this week about how nature reminds us that we are not alone.

Messages in the Breeze

The writer was reminiscing about working in the hot heat of Mississippi in the summer as he transitioned from a boy into a man. This was the time before air-conditioning was a standard in every home. The work on his uncle’s cotton farm, in the delta region, was hot and hard. When the weeds between the cotton plants and other tasks were completed at the end of the day, everyone would gather on the front porch. They would rock, talk, and attempt to find things to laugh about in the oppressive heat and humidity. And sometimes during this attempted distraction, the leaves of the trees would begin to rustle. The conversation would quickly die down, and everyone would turn and face the breeze that appeared to arrive from nowhere. It would come and go but it would prompt everyone that experienced it that it was a gift reminding them that they were not alone.

If you have ever been outside during any kind of heat, even mild heat, and received the blessing of that breeze you can identify with that gift of coolness. These special gifts from God remind us that even during problems, we are never alone. Many times, we feel alone in life, traveling our journey miles by ourselves, but if we will pay attention, God sends us subtle messages that we are not alone.

Always Journeying Upward

If you study the Bible, you may remember that Jerusalem is built on a plateau, so that no matter from which direction you are traveling towards Jerusalem, you are going up. The scriptures often begin the telling of events by saying, “We went up to Jerusalem.” The temple of Jerusalem was in the highest part of the city. So those traveling to the temple would journey upward until they reached their full destination. And so is our journey with God as well. Our entire journey, all our comings and goings move us forward and up as we gain a better relationship with our creator. And it is in this we realize that along the way, He is constantly reminding us that we are never alone.

The psalms help prompt us to look at our whole life, the good and bad and shows us that life is about how we worship God. Our worship should not be an hour on Sunday or whatever day of the week we may offer to Him, but it is always about all parts of our life and the promise of His presence.

Christ is our constant companion as we come, go, and journey through life. He is not a magical protection that makes all of life go our way, but a companion and guide as we journey upward. The more we claim His presence the better we can pay attention to follow His guidance and avoid falling backward. It is a presence, however, that we must claim to gain, crying out like the Spiritual Song, Give me Jesus, you can have all this world, just give me Jesus.

Paying Attention to the Things in Life

This week in our Lenten journey we look to Psalm 121 as it offers a sense of comfort and assurance that we so desperately need. It clearly tells us that God is our source of help. He not only guides us but protects us. Notice that it doesn’t tell us that life will go the way we want or be easier because sometimes our journey with God is right the opposite. But the psalm affirms that no matter what the world may throw at us, we are never alone. God offers His comforting presence and assurance that we will never walk alone or outside of His power.

The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

Psalm 121:8 (NLT)

If we pay attention to the things in life, we can clearly see and recognize that nothing ever diverts or deters God. We are safe for eternity and never outgrow our need for His untiring guard over our life. He promises us that in the good times and the bad, He still holds and keeps us. Nothing in the world has the power to overcome us when we follow with Him.

We are Never Alone No Matter the Season of Life

Some of us may be tired in our current season of life. Maybe we are tired of fighting, being hurt, exhausted from the mundane routine, sick of feeling the way we do, or a plethora of other things we could easily fill in the blank with. Therefore, the message of this passage is so important. It helps us realize that we don’t have to carry the burden, the hurts, or even the monotonies of life alone, for God is always with us. Our help comes from Him alone and if we turn our attention to Him, He will not allow whatever baggage we are carrying in life to overwhelm us. We can rest in the breeze of His offering.

God journeys with us and because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross not only are we never alone but our burdens are lifted if we pay attention to His presence in our life. So, won’t you seek out the ways or challenge yourself to connect closer with God daily; purposely searching for His presence, allowing Him to free you of your burdens while watching over you completely? Find your conviction through the Holy Spirit to just let go of this worldly life and let God take control. Be motivated by knowing that you have a shelter and refuge with God even when you feel you are alone. Because God is always watching over your comings and goings, so you are never alone. Lastly, find comfort in knowing that God is continually prompting you upward towards His holiness. He guides you in every circumstance and situation so you may find peace in the loving breezes of His presence.

Love in Christ,

E.J.
