Rest Well in the Light
Four-year-old Katie and her mother prepared for bed one night. The child was afraid of the dark, and her mother, on this occasion alone with the child, felt overcome with fear too. At last, her mother, reached her hand to the lamp turning the room into sudden darkness. But, Katie, immediately, saw a sliver of the moon outside the window. ”Mommy she asked, ”Is the moon God’s light?” ”Yes,” replied her mother. ”Will God put out His light and go to sleep?” Little Katie asked. Her mother replied, ”No, my child, God never goes to sleep.” Then with the stark simplicity of a child’s faith, Katie said that which gave reassurance to her fearful mother. ”Well, as long as God is awake, there is no sense in both of us staying awake.
Light is indeed a rather amazing thing. I won’t forget the thrill of the first time I worked in the darkroom exposing photography film to light revealing the image. To watch what once shroud in darkness take on life is an amazing process. One of the first photography projects my 1st-year students did every year was to make a pinhole camera. To watch their excitement when they exposed their first images elated me as much as them. Once they learned to overcome the darkness and work with the light, they would race out repeatedly to make better and better images.
We, too, can overcome the darkness of life and be prepared to race out for better things. Sometimes this darkness can appear to overwhelm our life. But, the Lord can overcome the darkness of life and fear. David, in the Old Testament, knew this better than anyone as the Lord rescued him from his enemies and Saul.
In our dark world, we have Christ who brings His light and gives hope to us. Because of this, we cannot allow the fears of life to overcome us or even trap us in our thinking. It is important to remember that we can conquer and overcome the fears of life whether externally or internally but only by trusting in the Lord who brings the light of salvation.
O Lord, you are my lamp. The Lord lights up my darkness. 2 Samuel 22:29 (NLT)
When you feel hopeless and left in the dark it is time to run into the light. It is only by the cross that the light beams to you through Christ. He is the truth and the way to life. Through Him, you can overcome the darkness no matter what your past holds. You become the overcomer as you run and dance in His light.
So, when you feel the darkness closing in remember to look and then run to the light. Hold onto the promises of God for He will hold you in His bright light.
Trust the Light
You must fully trust God and rely upon Him first no matter what kind of fear you are facing. For only through Christ can you overcome and rid your life of darkness. God makes the impossible possible shining the light of hope to all. You can trust Him when the darkness of doubts come or when your strength is small. Trust Him when to simply do so seems the hardest thing of all. You will see that when you trust Him, He is ever faithful. When you trust Him knowing His will is best you can trust Him for the heart of Jesus in which you can find rest.
Challenge yourself to overcome the darkness of life by trusting God at all times. Allow His light to convict your heart knowing that Christ brings the hope of light and it is through His sacrifice that you hold salvation. Find your motivation in knowing that you have no reason to allow fear to overcome you for He is with you no matter who may be against you. Surround yourself in the comfort of knowing that He loves you so much that He stands ready to bring you the light of life filled with hope and a future of goodness.
Love in Christ,
Wilma Rudolph said, ”When the sun is shining I can do anything; no mountain is too high, no trouble too difficult to overcome”
Let every day be filled with the bright light of God so you can overcome all the obstacles in your life knowing He is right beside you.
