Does Pursuing Happiness Lead to Life?
How are you pursuing life? For many people pursuing life is all about how to be happy. Some people feel that the United States Declaration of Independence mandates this answer as a right. For some, properly pursuing life is found in the opening sentence of the second paragraph:
Â We hold these Truths to be self-evident. That all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
But did our Creator make us to simply pursue happiness? If so it seems like we are failing here in the United States.
The World Happiness report revealed in March shows thatÂ the United States almost didn’t make it into the top fifteen as it came in ranking at the thirteenth level. (Dicker, 2016) The number one place in the world was Denmark. Apparently this was very surprising to people because Denmark’s tax rates are extremely high. But what Denmark appears to do better than any otherÂ country is make sure all the different need aspects of their citizens are well taken care of. (Wiking, 2016) They seem to be a country who cares aboutÂ the welfare of itsÂ people. They have realized that people are the most important commodity they have. So maybe the Danes have discovered that happiness is not the thing to pursue instead maybe it is love.
Pursuing Love Leads to Life
Seeking Christ and His unfailing love gives more to life than earthly concerns. For finding Him is pursuing life to the extreme with eternity in the reward. A relationship with Christ makes us right with God. Discovering and developing a meaningful connection with Christ creates a desire to follow His teaching. He tells us clearly to love each other just as He loves us. Pursuing love through Christ is the way to righteousness and the finding of the gift of perfect love. It is only through Christ that we can find the level of life we desire. For we will never be satisfied just pursuing happiness.
There are three magnificent gates that lead into the Cathedral of Milan. Over one gate there is an inscription in marble under the imagery of a flower bouquet that reads, ”The things that please are temporary.” Over the second gate, there in an inscription which reads, ”The things that disturb us are temporary.” The center gate’s inscription states, what should be the obvious, ”Eternal are the important ones.” How much different would life in the world be if we all recognized the differences?
God placed in our human hearts the desire and longing for eternity. (Ecclesiastes 3:11) Pursuing earthly pleasures will not bring us happiness or a fulfilling life. Satisfaction in life comes only from finding God. We find God from our belief and relationship with Christ. It is only through Christ that eternal life is possible. (John 3:15) Loving others as commanded by Christ will provide the means for happiness. But it is only through the love of Jesus that we are pursuing life to the extreme.
Whoever pursues righteousness and unfailing love will find life, righteousness, and honor, Proverbs 21:21 (NLT)
How to Pursue Life
So what should your response be if you want to pursue a life to the extreme? It is important that all people seek to be right with God finding His continuous love in the sending of His son. For that is what leads to life eternal. If you want to pursue life, then you must first recognize that the ways of the world are not the ways of God and there is nothing greater than knowing Christ. The second step is to know that you can depend on the Holy Spirit while you are on earth knowing that the only way to be right with God is through Christ.
You are challenged to pursue what is truly important. Your convictions create a desire for you to want to be right with God. It is through this revelation that you will learn that your motivation to depend upon God allows the Holy Spirit to guide you in your everyday life on earth. It all begins with a belief in Christ to pursue life, discover love, and in the mix you will find the happiness you think is important. For you will discover along the way that it is through pursuing life eternal that the power of love crashes in, satisfying and quenching the thirst for life.

Make your mission to seek, accept, and share the love of Christ for this is the treasure and it will be what your life follows.
