The Book of Re-evaluation
One full week into the new year and I’m feeling like it needs re-evaluating. As this first full week hit full force so did the meetings, obligations, and the self-imposed goals. When we struggle to find balance, we often look for ways to solve our problems just like Sally, the Peanuts comic strip character. Sally was struggling with her memory verse for Sunday. As she tried to figure it out she remembers, ”Maybe it was something from the Book of Re-evaluation.”
Sally didn’t find her memory verse in the nonexistent book, but she did move in the right direction by re-evaluating the problem through recognizing her search should begin with God. We, too, should seek God through scripture and prayer with the full intent of re-evaluating our attitudes and actions. It is important to make sure they are in line with God’s truth through His word.
When life’s balance shifts so do our attitudes and actions. This often causes us to seek other directions to create harmony or we determine to go it alone. In these wrong direction solutions, all the joy and happiness of life get pushed to the side or hidden completely as the overwhelming obligations and pressures of life push against us.
With a good re-evaluation, we realize that even in the turmoil of the pressure cooker world we live that joy is within our reach with a relationship with Christ. God wants us to know Him and has promised that we will find Him if we look with our hearts and souls. Because God’s Word is true and wonderful, staying close to Him is necessary to keep the balance that we need. For obedience to His laws is the only way to achieve real happiness and ultimate joy in life.
Searching for Joy and Happiness!
Joy is within everyone’s reach with a relationship with Christ, no matter how off balanced life may be or suddenly become. But a relationship does not occur without a desire to want to know Him. He isn’t looking for us but instead stands by waiting for us to look to Him for help. As Hebrews 11:6 tells us anyone who wants to come to Him must first believe He exists and then He rewards those who sincerely seek Him for a relationship. As we seek Him out our relationship develops beyond service and worship as it turns into devotion. This is where the balance shifts and the joy multiplies.
Joyful are those who obey His laws and search for Him with all their hearts. Psalm 119:2 (NLT)
So, if you feel your life balance is shifting perhaps it is time to consistently seek God with your heart and soul. Seeking out God should always be your first response when you feel the stress of life pushing in. There are many people in the world who have great knowledge and expertise that should be consulted when you face situations outside of your realm but only after you have first placed your trust fully in God. It is through Him and His Word that we find His advice and recognize His authority over every facet of our lives. For He is the only one who will matter in the end.
A businessman, well-known for his ruthlessness, once announced to the famous writer, Mark Twain, ”Before I die I mean to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I will climb Mount Sinai and read the Ten Commandments aloud at the top.” Twain replied, ”I have a better idea. You can stay in Boston and keep them.”
Re-evaluating Trust and Obey to Find Joy
It is important that you consistently seek God each day in both the good, bad, and mediocre situations of life. You are built so that it is only through Him you can find true satisfaction in life. He loves you and desires a relationship with you but will never force Himself and instead stands waiting for you to come to Him. For it is only by seeking Him out that your life balances and it is through following Him that the obstructions in life fall to the side and you find true joy.
A newly licensed pilot was flying his private plane on a cloudy day. He was not very experienced in instrument landing. When the control tower was to bring him in, he began to get panicky. Through his stress he heard a stern voice come over the radio, ”You just obey the instructions, we’ll take care of the obstructions.”
Challenge yourself today to fully trust in God by seeking Him first. By following your convictions obey His instructions and allow Him to take care of the obstructions. Allow your motivation to take root in the rewarding balance of true happiness and joy knowing that He is ready to reward you for your relationship. Find your comfort in knowing that no matter what circumstances you face or even how far you may fall from Him, He loves you and is always ready and standing by for you to begin again through Him.
So, if your life is already falling out of balance and needs re-evaluating in this New Year, just begin again putting Him first and finding your true joy and happiness once again.
Love in Christ,
Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.
