Sweet Love: What the World Needs

What is Sweet Love?

Sweet Love Studio 1-37's Poppy FieldSweet love was what I thought the world needed when I read some of the news lines earlier this week.

  • Researchers warning that antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as ”superbugs” could kill ten million people by 2050

  • Egypt-Air Flight 840 tragedy remains a mystery

  • ISIS remains on the rise in the United States

  • Mosquitoes with the Zika virus could inflect Americans in the next month

  • Gun violence appears totally out of control but do people care?

God, please send some sweet love to the world now as we are appearing to be spiraling out of control. Maybe that is what Hal David thought too when he read the headlines to his world in 1965 and wrote the poem to the song that he and Burt Bacharach debuted in 1965 as performed by Jackie DeShannon.

The headlines from 1965 didn’t really sound better than the ones from today.  The war in Vietnam continued to worsen as more American lives succumbed to death each day. If that wasn’t enough the Anti-War movement continued to grow creating a divide in the country between thoughts of what was right and wrong. There was civil unrest with rioting, looting, and arson in Los Angeles while during the same year Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a civil rights march in Alabama from Selma to Montgomery. Hal David said that he wrote the song to God and it took more time to write these lyrics than others finally settling on an antithesis of what the world didn’t need.

Lord, we don’t need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last ’till the end of time

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone

Yes, what the world needed then was love, sweet love. It is still what is greatly needed today and it will be what is most needed tomorrow. Because it is what was desperately needed over two thousand years ago. We didn’t need to ask God for it because He knew what we needed and not only did He freely give it He sent it in the form of His son. God not only gives us His love He showed us love in the world’s greatest sacrifice ever given. God willingly gave His son’s life for us to be able to live eternally.

God provides for each one of us His unconditional love every moment of each day and He reminds us that He provided even more as Jesus gave the ultimate example for us to follow. It is love that makes the world a better place because God clearly shows us by granting us eternal life through simply believing that He sent us His son to die in our place. Until we are willing to follow the love that stands above all others we will always fear the seemingly dismal place we live in.

Love supersedes everything and that is what this week’s focus verse is about. Sweet love of the world comes when we recognize this wondrous gift and share it with others.

Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirement of God’s law. Romans 13:10 (NLT)

Do you want the world to receive what it needs?

  • Then be challenged today to obey the royal law of God and treat all people equally, fairly, and with love?
  • Find yourself convicted in loving others because of Christ’s love for you.
  • Be motivated in love because you want to be right with God and you can embrace the comfort in knowing that God allowed His son to set the ultimate example of love for you to follow giving you undeserving life for eternity.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love, and it begins with every individual accepting and sharing the sweet love of Christ!

Happy Memorial Day as we remember all of those who truly showed sweet love for others.

Love in Christ,
