The Cost of Love
Did you receive a gift from an unfailing love on Valentine’s Day? I found myself astonished at the number of people in the grocery store Tuesday afternoon as I purchased raisins. I fought my way to the dried fruit aisle circumventing the clerk at the front door cutting and wrapping fresh roses to give to throngs of customers waiting around her. Then I battled my way through another crowd picking out greeting cards conveniently placed as another obstacle by the front door. As I continued on my journey encountering another wave of people pawing through decorated heart-shaped boxes of candy I realized that it was Valentine’s Day. Obviously these were the people who waited until the last-minute to show the value their unfailing love holds. I began to wonder as I exited the store with my preciously gained raisins on just how much money Valentine’s Day nets?
ABC News reports that the expected total spending for the holiday was around $18.2 billion, according to the National Retail Federation, (NRF). This is an average of $136.57 per person of the 54 percent of Americans celebrating the holiday. So what are the masses buying in the name of love?
The most popular Valentine’s Day gift is jewelry which the NRF accounts for about $4.3 billion. As you might have guessed the second most popular gift is flowers where in the name of love consumers spend about $2 billion. Candy, specifically chocolate falls within a close dollar range of the flowers where spending is about $1.7 billion. The fourth place gift, which is the most inexpensive remembrance of all, still reaches the billion rank in sales and that is greeting cards. The Greeting Card Association estimates that spending this year will reach $1 billion. That is about 190 million cards according to the NRF.
What Are You Willing to Do for Love?
I found the numbers spent in the name of love rather staggering for a world that seems to report daily about the antithesis of love. For some people however the purchase of a love gift is just not enough they need further proof. Take for instance the lady in Spain that some time ago made the AFP news when she chose a rather extreme way to test her husband’s love. She arranged with the help of a friend to manipulate her own kidnapping and send a ransom notice to her husband. The police quickly discovered the hoax of kidnapping and asked the lady the question weighing on a lot of minds, why? She said she did it because she wanted to find out what her husband was willing to do for her.
I don’t know how far her husband was willing to go for her in the name of love but I do know how far God’s enduring love goes and to the lengths He orchestrates to make sure we can unite with Him. God’s love for us is not only greater than all things it is an absolute love that is irrevocable. He didn’t express His love in a card, candy sweets, flowers in a vase, or jewelry. Instead He sent His most precious thing, His Son. Why did He do this? Because He loves us so much and wants us to be part of His life.
It is because of His love that we can sing of His unfailing love forever. There are two very important keywords in this week’s focus verse found in Psalm 89:1a; unfailing and forever.
I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing love forever! Psalm 89:1a (NLT)
Unfailing Love for All: No Matter What!
His unfailing unconditional love not only defines but clearly describes the love that God holds for you. This love is proven through the promises of the ages showing that His love never fails. For it is seen time again that when He makes a promise He follows through on that promise. It is upon His faithful promises or His unfailing love that you can depend upon Him in times of distress turning negative circumstances into reminders of His faithful presence. It is through knowing that you can turn to God no matter what you face or what your past holds that truly transforms your life.
God is the ever flowing fountain of all things good because He is the source of the purest love created, absolute love. People strive to reach such heights but even the most dedicated will not be able to surpass or equal the love of God. The love of God is not temporary or fleeting but a lasting commitment. It is not based on things going right or even what you do or how you act for this is the purest of love; unfailing and immeasurable. Christ laid down His life for all while we were still His enemies according to Romans 5:8. This proves our actions have nothing to do with His love for us.
Forever Love: Secured by Proven Promises
God’s love is not only unfailing it is also forever. No matter what this world brings those with Christ in their hearts will experience the full promises of God where His love remains forever in the light. It is on that day of no darkness that Christ will indeed reign forever with all believers by His side. This promise shows God’s deep irrevocable love. His love of the past and future holds also true for the experiences of today as you bask in His warmth of promise.
So whether you received jewelry, flowers, candy, a card or absolutely nothing physical on Valentine’s Day recognize that you hold the most valuable love ever imagined with the love that God holds for you. For God’s love surrounds you all the time and not just on a special holiday for He is the very essence of love. Allow His love to convict you acknowledging that He fulfills His promises through all times with your motivation found in knowing that there is nothing you can do that will undo or revoke His love. Let this comfort soak into your soul knowing that the creator loves you beyond your wildest possible belief.
For God loves (your name) so much that He gave His only begotten Son. That when I believe in Him. I will not perish and will have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
This is what allows you to sing of the Lord’s unfailing love forever.
Love in Christ,
The love of God knows no end.
Lord may your boundless and unfailing love surround us.
